Why Do We Ask So Many Questions?

If you’ve preregistered to become a brain donor or helped arrange a donation for a loved one, you may have noticed that we ask for a lot of information.

Medical history. Diagnoses. Medical records. Participation in research studies or clinical trials.

Why do we need to know so much? Because a donated brain is even more valuable to researchers when the tissue is accompanied by information that helps tell the story of the person it came from.

Researchers need context to understand the tissue they are studying. A brain sample can provide important information on its own, but its scientific value increases when researchers also know about the donor’s age, diagnoses, symptoms, medications and
medical history. This is known as characterized tissue—tissue accompanied by information that helps researchers understand and interpret what they find.

Medical records help brain banks confirm diagnoses and provide important details about a donor’s health history, including when symptoms began, how a condition progressed and what treatments were used. They can also help researchers compare what was observed during life with what is found in the brain after death. Those connections can provide important clues about how diseases develop, how they are diagnosed and why they may affect people differently.

If a brain donor participated in a clinical trial or other research study during life, that information can be particularly valuable. Research studies may collect cognitive assessments, brain imaging, laboratory results, neurological examinations or information about how someone responded to a treatment. Brain donation creates the possibility of connecting that information collected during life with the donor’s brain tissue after death.

We know that providing detailed information and helping obtain medical records takes time—especially for families dealing with the loss of someone they love. But there is an important reason behind every request. Our goal isn’t simply to facilitate the donation of brain tissue. It’s to help make each generous donation as useful to science as possible.

We’re helping preserve the story that goes with the tissue. And that story can help researchers better understand what they see in the brain—and help advance our understanding.
